General information on Xanthi?s prefecture

The size of the Prefecture of Xanthi (Νομού Ξάνθης) is 1.793 square kilometers and the population is about 101.856 habitants (General Secretariat of National Statistical Service of Greece, 2001 census). The prefecture of Xanthi consists of 6 municipalities and 4 communities.
At the North of the prefecture we meet the mountain chain of Rodopi and at the south the plain of Xanthi that reaches the Aegean costs.
The city of Xanthi is the capital of the prefecture with 45.111 habitants (General Secretariat of National Statistical Service of Greece, 2001census) and it is built amphitheatrically at the foothill of Rodopi while the river Kosinthos floats in the gully shaped through the hills of the city. In this way a special urban design is created and adjusted to the floating of the river.
