The city of Xanthi had been an important center for the establishment of educational institutions in the late 19th until the beginning of the 20th century. In the last decade of the 19th century -around 1886- there were the following schools operating: 1 Greek High school having 5 grades, 40 scholars and 4 schoolteachers, 1 ??Urban? school with 6 grades, 200 scholars and 4 teachers, 1 girls? schools of 8 grades in which 132 girls studied and taught 3 female schoolteachers. There were also 4 Kindergartens with 267 infants and 4 kindergarten teachers. In 1905 the concise picture which is given to us regarding the educational life in Xanthi, reports that there were in total 32 Greek schools operating and 2.953 students attending them.
