LOCATION:
North of Xanthi. Elevation about 150 m.
HISTORY:
The Monastery controls access of inner Rodopi, the old road which leads to Philipoupolis and to the Monastery of Batchkovo .The remains of the Bema?s frescos are dated back to mid Byzantine era. The Monastery suffered serious damages during the 1829?s earthquakes. In the early 20th century The bishop of Xanthi, Ioakim Sgouros tried to rebuild it. After the destruction of Asia Minor and until 1936 there was a boys? orphanage in the monastery in order to accommodate and hospitalize the orphan refugees. Nowadays the Ecclesiastic School of Xanthi is hosted there.
CATHOLIC:
It is a small building like the three-cornered temples. In the early 20th century a narthex was added to the building of the Byzantine era. Pieces of fresco which show the hierarchs? co-officiating, which are dated back to the mid- Byzantine era, are still preserved . Fresco?s on the spherical triangles and the cupola, which are dated between the end of the 16th to the beginning of the 17th century, have been preserved .The reconstruction of the catholic is temporalized in the 9th century.
