Monastery of Panagia Kalamou,Xanthi

LOCATION:It is located on the north of Xanthi.Elevation:170m.
HISTORY:According to tradition, the monastery took its name by a miraculous icon which was found in a cane field near river Cosinthos.The monastery was probably founded in the 11th century.Information about the historical evolution of the Monastery is given in functional manuscripts,which are now kept in Sophia.In the 15th century the Monastery flourishes and from the 16th century and on a coppying laboratory operates.In the 18-19th century the monastery its increases wealth whereas the 1829's earthquakes caused severe damages.Bulgars,who had occupied the area,took the heirlooms of the monastery and carried them to Sophia.The icons of Panagia "Kalamiotissa"(16th centry) and Assumption (19th century) are very interesting.It is a womanly monastery.
CATHOLIC:The Monastery is onered on the Assumption but it is celebrated on 23rd August.The today's Catholic is a copy of the the temple of Protato in Mount Athos and was founded in 1996 and initiated in 2001 by the Metropolitan of Xanthi Mr.Panteleimonas.
