19th-century Schools and Teachers in unified Thrace

The large number of schools in the towns and large villages is evidence of the development of a unified Thrace during the 19th century.
This speech explores the operation and problems of these schools, the contribution of organisations, communities, associations and also benefactors to their foundation and maintenance. Furthermore, the education in Philippoupoli and Adrianople, as well as in (south) west Thrace. Finally,the great role of the teachers, men and women, throughout the education system, is highlighted by shedding light on the lives and work of two leading teachers, Vl. Skordelis and G.I. Labousiades.
