Management of the riverside Nestos forest

This event co-organised by the Foundation and co-organised the Goulandris Natural History Museum. Greeting on behalf of Ioannis Dafis, professor of Forestry, delivered by Ms Maria Katsakiori, head of environmental education and awareness at the Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre (EKBY), Goulandris Natural History Museum.
The next speaker was the honorary Chief Ranger of Xanthi, Mr Yiannis Gevrekis, on ?The lost paradise,? presenting the history of the degrading of the Great Forest of Nestos from the 1960s until our days, as well as proposals for rehabilitating sections of that legendary forest. This was followed by the lecture of the Chief Ranger of Kavala, Mr Yiannis Kapetanyiannis, on ?Rehabilitation and showcasing the Nestos riverside forest.? The speaker presented two important management programmes being implemented by the Kavala Forestry Authority, in collaboration with EPO and EKBY. The aim of these rehabilitation programmes is to restore the biodiversity of the riverside and, at the same time, promote and showcase it. The speakers emphasised the importance of these management interventions for the long-term sustainable development of our region.
