A special characteristic of the traditional architecture of the town is the cocoon house, where housing and breeding of the silkworms was combined, while the traditional local economy at Soufli focused in the silk production. Soufli is the only settlement of Thrace where the sericulture developed even if it was a homemade production and was never removed from the domestic space. This fact is reflected on the local architecture, since we can trace the gradual development of traditional Thracian architecture of residence at the specialized of mixed industrial or homemade use building. These buildings are of different sizes and periods and have standard constructional peculiarities. The cocoon houses of the late 19th century and the beginnings of the 20th are bi-leveled or with three levels, of industrial character, with a special morphology and representing the architecture of the Ottoman period. The evolution of the traditional Thracian residence to the specialized one, with combined use, is reflected on these buildings.
