The cultural monuments of a region express the ways of life, questions and achievements of specific periods. Religious monuments express the religious needs and metaphysical questions of population groups, as well as their cultural orientation. The study of the religious monuments of Thrace provides us with a knowledge of the history and art of the wider region of Thrace, and charts its historical course. They also indicate the cultural and religious context for the coexistence of different religious groups in the region, and their contribution to its spiritual and cultural progress. It is also well known that mosques, as with other religious monuments, functioned in the past and continue to function as educational and cultural centres. They are core points for the development and planning of towns and villages, and centres of history and art. The Muslim monuments are the least studied, and cover the period from the 16th to the 20th century.
