Babo

A celebration of fertility and for a fortunate new year performed only by women. It is devoted to Babo, the midwife of the village, at the beginnings of the new year, on the 8th of January, and coincides with the period of the Dodekaimeron, a carnival period for Northern Greece leading to masquerades and loosness accepted by the local community as actions for a happy and fortunate year. . It is performed at Rodopi: Xilagani, Proskinites, Strimi, Dioni, Krovili, Sapes, Imeros, Fanari, Roditis. In Xanthi?s prefecture: Nea Kesani, Magana. Drama?s prefecture: Kali Vrisi and Volakas. Minor alterations in Rodopi: Xilagani, Proskinites, Strimi, Dioni, Krovili, Sapes, Imeros, Fanari, Roditis. Xanthi?s Prefecture: Nea Kesani, Magana. Drama?s Prefecture: Kali Vrisi and Volakas.

Tzamala

A Custom located in Eastern Thrace. It is performed every year at the end of October at Nea Adriani of Rodopi?s Prefecture. A ritual and rural custom for good fortune connected with seeding and realized through dramatized action. It is performed with varations at Stavroupolis, Xanthi, during carnival. This custom was long before performed with varations at Vrisika, Evros.

Xanthi?s carnival

Xanthi?s city is is celebrating in the last Sunday of Carnival. It is the biggest carnival parade in Northern Greece. Many floats and masqueraded people create a festive atmosphere for young and old.

Ancient fertility fest for welcoming spring, performed by the Pomaks and Roma on the 6th of May. We also find variations of this fest in all the villages of the mountainous area of Thrace and also in Anahoma and Alana Kougiou, Komotini.
