The Zappeion Megaron (pronounced
/'zapion 'megaron/ -
the stress is on the syllable following the mark) was
erected in 1874 – 1888 and was designed by the architect Theophil
Hansen. It has hosted the first modern
Olympic Games which took place in Athens in 1896.
In recent years, Zappeion
Megaron has witnessed important moments in Greece’s political
history: the Treaty of Accession by which Greece became a full member of
the European Community was signed on its premises on May 29, 1979.
It normally serves as an international exhibition hall
according to the original plan of its designers.
