The Municipality of Stavroupoli is located at the southwest mountainous region of the Prefecture of Xanthi and is 28 km from the town of Xanthi. It borders with the Prefectures of Drama and Kavala on the north and west respectively. It includes 26 settlements with Stavroupoli being in the centre; Stavroupoli is a small town built in the Thracian-Macedonian style next to Nestos river. The Municipality has a population of 2,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 381,000 km2.
The locations of Kallithea and Livaditis are situated further north of Stavroupoli, at an altitude of more than 1,000 m. There are several mountain refuges at this area for those who want to experience a unique escape to nature. A Macedonian-style funerary monument has been revealed near the village of Komnina. Further south, visitors can see the abandoned village of Livera and probably see wild horses wandering around. The small cave of Livera is found at a short distance, yet only a small part of it has been explored.
The forest village of Erymanthos began operating at the north of the Municipality, in July 2002. In this area, visitors can contemplate the highest falls in the Balkans ? they reach a height of 35 m ? or the mountaintop of Gyftocastro at an altitude of 1,745 m, which holds panoramic views, or the arched bridge of Leonidas on the way to Arkoudorema and the castle of Kaliva, which is an important archaeological site in the area.
Many modern and traditional guesthouses are on the disposal of the visitors who would like to spend their holidays in a hospitable and peaceful place. Traditional taverns are scattered in several settlements of the Municipality and are ready to offer all sorts of traditional delicacies that will satisfy even the most hard-to-please visitors.
