The ritual of Beis


A custom originating from Eastern Romilia. Beis is performed with variations at the villages of Northern Evros: Rizia, Kamara, Kiprinos, Petrota, Rigio, Vrisika, Didimoticho, Kastanies, Nea Visa, Petrota. A custom for a fortunate year with Dionysian descent and Beis or Kiopek Beis or the king with his followers as the protagonist. It ends to a feigned seeding and plowing at the village?s square. Kiopek Beis: a symbol of power, forerunner of Persefoni?s coming on earth, the daughter of Dimitra. For this reason, the area Ortakii is also called Dimitria. Kiopek Beis is like a deity of fertility and happiness that notifies of the spring?s arrival.

Cock sacrifices at St.Dimitrios celebration


Inhabitants of the Didimoticho area sacrifice roosters for the St. Dimitrios on the day of his celebration, on the 26th of October. This sacrifice takes place at the little chapel devoted to the saint at the Kale hill, Didimoticho.

St. Athanasios? kourban


A kourban on the day of the celebration of St. Athanasios, the 2nd of May, is performed in honor of the saint in villages like Strimi, Rodopi and Dadia, Evros. A calf is butchered and eylogized by the village?s clerical, cooked at the church?s yard and offered to the ones attending.
