Indefinite pronouns

Next Page

Τhe adverbs "ποτέ", "καθόλου" and “πουθενά” follow exactly the same structural pattern as the indefinite pronouns and may be used either with an indefinite or a negative meaning:

1. They are used with an indefinite meaning in interrogative sentences: καθόλου=anything/any, ποτέ=ever, πουθενά=anywhere

e.g.
-Έχεις πάει ποτέ στο εξωτερικό;
(Ηave you ever been abroad?).

-Έχεις καθόλου μετρητά;
(Do you have any cash?)

-Πήγες πουθενά αυτό το Σαββατοκύριακο;
(Did you go anywhere this weekend?)

2. They are used with a negative meaning in the negative sentences (ποτέ=never, καθόλου=no, πουθενά=nowhere). When these adverbs are used in a negative meaning, the verb form should also be in the negative form.

e.g.
-Έχεις πάει ποτέ στο εξωτερικό;
-Όχι, δεν έχω πάει ποτέ στο εξωτερικό.
(Ηave you ever been abroad?.
Νο, Ι haven’t never been abroad).

-Έχεις καθόλου μετρητά;
-Όχι, δεν έχω καθόλου μετρητά.
(Do you have any cash?
Νο, I don't have no cash.)

-Πήγες πουθενά αυτό το Σαββατοκύριακο;
-Όχι, δεν πήγα πουθενά.
(Did you go anywhere this weekend?
No, I didn’t go nowhere.)
