Thrakika Chronika

The periodical Thrakika Chronika (Thracian Chronicles) published by the late Stephanos Ioannides was the most significant publishing effort for the highlighting, research and showcasing of Thracian writing and history. Even today, researchers and general readers turn to its issues for valuable material on the historical, literary and folklore research of Thrace. These issues have been hard to find for a while now, since the final volume was published.

Neoteri Thrakiki Logotechnia

The two issues of Thanasis Mousopoulos? Neoteri Thrakiki Logotechnia (New Thracian Literature), published by the Pontian Association in a collective effort to record the history of Thrace, are an attempt at a synoptic overview of the literary output of Thrace in modern times. Included in this overview are writers with roots in Thrace but who were active outside the geographical limits of the region and distinguished throughout the whole of Greece. This publishing effort is useful for the study of important trends and movements influenced by the region?s literary output. Their digitisation is also significant as these issues are now out of print.

Abdera, ge tou Kallous kai tou Stochasmou

The study Abdera, ge tou kallous kai tou stochasmou (Abdera, Land of Beauty and Contemplation) looks at the history of Thrace?s best-known archaeological site, a city that flourished during classical antiquity. Its pages contain information not only on ancient Abdera, bus also on Byzantine Polystylo and Bouloustra in the Ottoman period. The diachronic narrative of the changes in the city, which maintained its splendour, as can be seen in the extracts from works by foreign travellers in the early 19th century, brings to life the greatness of its philosophical thought and the contestation of ideas with a wider influence. The description of Democritean philosophy and the brief biographies of philosophers and poets who came from or lived in the region relate the cultural wealth of a city that flourished for centuries.

Pomakika Demotica Tragoudia tis Thrakis

The book by Ali Rongo, ?Pomakika Demotica Tragoudia tis Thrakis", is a splendid effort at collecting the rich musical and poetical heritage of the Pomaks of Thrace in order to highlight the unique musical wealth of the region. As the author states, the 125 songs included in the book are especially old as some even talk of the ?comitadjis.? The songs differ from village to village, and each has its own history. Most, however, were created by people experiencing suffering, poverty, hunger and separation. In the past they would be sung at festivals in the Pomak villages, sometimes accompanied by dancing, although very few today sing them publicly. Given the danger, then, that beyond the oral tradition they would be forgotten, the author decided to collect and publish a number of them, so that they could be preserved in the collective memory.
